Central
Piedmont Health Services, Inc. (CPHS) was established in 1986 as
Sandy River Medical Center (SRMC), through the efforts of
residents of the Sandy River community in Pittsylvania County,
Virginia. SRMC
continues in the name of one of three-health center sites now
operated by CPHS. The
concern that led to the establishment of SRMC was the shortage
of health care professionals and services in the
medically-underserved area (MUA) and the immediate difficulty of
finding affordable and reasonably accessible health care either
locally or in nearby Danville or Martinsville. |

The initial goal was
to provide services to residents of the Tunstall Magisterial
District of Pittsylvania County. This initiative resulted in the development of a satellite
health center of the Brunswick Community Health Center in
Alberta, Virginia, located approximately 110 miles from the
Axton/Sandy River area. SRMC
commenced operations in a bi-level, 4800 square foot clinic
building. The
building was obtained and constructed through county development
funds and is now wholly owned by CPHS.
SRMC became a freestanding medical center and was
approved for direct Section 330 funding in 1989 and continued
receiving those funds until 2003. |

Currently,
CPHS provides primary healthcare (most insurances accepted) on a
fee-for-service basis. Services
to aid the underserved in the community are provided by way of a
limited number of sliding scale fee applications as well as the
implementation of The Pharmacy Connection program.
Eligible Veteran patients who are currently enrolled via
one of CPHS’s three Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOC)
are also assured of more logistically immediate access to
primary healthcare as well. |
